BRD presents the third annual Winter Contemporary Youth Intensive, offering contemporary dancers ages 13-18 an immersive and professional dance experience. During the three-day workshop, dancers will study contemporary and ballet techniques and learn choreography from BRD’s repertoire, all under the instruction of BRD dancers, past and present. Concluding the three-day intensive, students perform excerpts from rep pieces learned, as well as work from their technique classes, in an informal showing open to parents and community members.
As participants in the youth intensive, students engage in daily opportunities to develop as strong, thoughtful artists through classes in contemporary technique, classical and contemporary ballet, conditioning, workshops, and repertory sessions. In these sessions, dancers learn choreography from the company’s portfolio of work from nationally recognized choreographers. Through kinesthetic problem-solving and vulnerable creativity, dancers complete the intensive with a sense of community and shared accomplishment. A participant from BRD’s 2017 Summer Intensive expressed appreciation of their instructor’s ability to “help each dancer find their own way of connecting with the dance and movement.” Still others “loved learning how [they] could move in different ways,” and appreciated “the positive and motivated attitude from students and teachers.” This inspiring week is one that students and teachers alike look forward to all year long. Participating dancers must be 13-18 years old and have at least two years of dance technique experience (or special permission from a BRD company member).
