Classical Ballet (int)

With a focus on coordination, strength, and flexibility, this class begins with barre work to find proper bodily alignment. Center work improves balance and allows us to incorporate alignment principles into dance phrases. Part of this ballet class will be devoted to stretching to gain flexibility, prevent injury, and invite relaxation.

$10 drop-in ($5 for 7DDF participants)

Instructor: Cher Carnell danced professionally for 11 years with numerous ballet companies both in the United States and Europe, including Milwaukee Ballet, San Diego Ballet, Ballet Metropolitan, Theater an der Wien and Scottish-American Ballet. Ms. Carnell has an extensive teaching background as a master teacher in pre-professional schools, universities, as well as professional ballet and modern companies. She has taught ballet at Western Washington University since 1997, specializing in the intermediate and advanced levels.

Contemporary Jazz (int/adv)

Dancers of any style are welcome in this fun and energetic class exploring funk and contemporary jazz. Our focus will be playing with energy, dynamics, and musicality with an emphasis on confident and clear expression. Liberal use of imagery, fun choreography, and good music aim to unleash your inner badass.

$15 drop-in ($5 for 7DDF participants)

Instructor: Diane Williams is a movement and visual artist who has been dancing, choreographing, and teaching in Bellingham for more than 15 years. She studied dance at the University of Washington and on scholarship at Western Washington University, and has taught at WWU, Pacific Danceworks, and Northwest Ballet School. Diane currently teaches Contemporary, Jazz, Lyrical and Choreography classes at Opus Performing Arts School. She is a co-founder of Bellingham Repertory Dance, recently retired from the stage after twelve years with the company.

Awaken your body and focus your mind. This dynamic, all levels class is designed to safely build strength, balance, endurance, alignment, and concentration. Clear the cobwebs and head into your day from a grounded and open place. Please bring your own mat, blanket, block, and strap if you have them. A limited number will be made available.

Instructor: Megan Sherman believes that by working with what shows up in our physical body, we can clear impediments to actualizing our fullest self. Megan draws on years of study and practice in massage techniques ranging from Medical, Deep Tissue, Myofascial, Sports, Orthopedic, Structural Integration, Shiatsu, as well as decades of yoga practice.

This class will focus on body awareness, sensation, athleticism, and artistry. Any and all adult/teen dancers are invited to come move with us in a completely welcoming and mixed-level atmosphere! A structured, accessible warm-up will be followed by skill building and movement phrase work.

$15 drop-in ($5 for 7DDF participants)

Instructor: Tatyana Stahler is a graduate of WWU with a Bachelor of Arts in Dance and a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology, with a focus in Health and Fitness Specialization. Currently, Tatyana is an adjunct faculty member for Western Washington University teaching Pilates and Mod-Hop. As an instructor at Opus Performing Arts, Tatyana enjoys teaching multiple disciplines of dance to a wide range of students. She is also a Pilates instructor at Core Kinetics.

A base knowledge of ballet is assumed, but this class will offer contemporary ballet combinations that challenge physically and mentally no matter what level of experience you have.

$10 drop-in ($5 for 7DDF participants)

Instructor: Celeste Hartsook trained in classical ballet and modern dance at Ballet Arts Academy in Spokane, WA. From 2005-2008, Celeste was a member of a regional company, Theatre Ballet of Spokane, in which she performed original works by Ballet Arts faculty and an original work by Charles Askegard (New York City Ballet). Celeste participated in workshops and dance classes through Whitman College, American Ballet Theatre, Paul Taylor Dance Company, and Western Washington University. She is currently a ballet instructor at Opus Performing Arts.

Find your flow in this contemporary dance class open to all levels of experience. We will start with a grounding warm-up and will build sequential movement pathways with an emphasis on alignment, range of motion, and effort. This class will offer experiences of both structured improvisation, as well as guided phrasework.

Instructor: Juliette Machado earned her BFA in Dance from Western Washington University. She has trained extensively in ballet and modern dance techniques. Juliette currently teaches for Whatcom Community College’s dance program and loves teaching occasional company classes for BRD.

Instructor: Hannah Rothschiller grew up in Kent, WA and has been dancing since the age of seven. She has trained In ballet, tap, jazz, lyrical, contemporary, hip hop, and modern dance. In 2018, she graduated from WWU with her BFA in Dance. Hannah has been a dance instructor at The Dance Studio for four years, as well as a member of Bellingham Repertory Dance for two seasons.

Improvisation (all levels)

This improvisational dance class is open to everyone, regardless of dance background or experience! It will build with structured prompts and exercises to loosen up participants’ bodies and orient them in space. The class will then move in and out of various task-like explorations and end with an open, round-robin style practice time.

Instructor: Charlotte Stickles is a movement artist and pilates instructor with a BFA in Dance from Ohio State University. Originally from Irvington, New York, she began her dance training at local Hudson Valley studios before eventually enrolling as a student at Manhattan Youth Ballet. Under this classical training regimen, Charlotte developed an interest in choreography and improvisation, which led her to the Department of Dance at Ohio State University. There she studied under Norah Zuniga-Shaw, Ann Sofie Clemmensen, Bebe Miller, Susan Hadley, and Eddie Taketa.

Dance Church™ is an all abilities movement class that offers a fun, nonexclusive approach to dancing. Designed for people of all shapes, sizes, backgrounds and identities, Dance Church is a communal space for everyone who wants to move their body. No previous training is required, but open-mindedness is a prerequisite.

$15 drop-in ($5 for 7DDF participants)

Alethea Alexander guides this 90 minute class in a series of movement cues, accompanied by a curated playlist of multi-genre pop music. This is the dance party you wish you had last night.

Instructor: Alethea Alexander holds an M.F.A. in dance from the UW where she is currently serving on faculty as Acting Assistant Professor. Alethea has performed with the artists of Bellingham Repertory Dance (Bellingham); Chamber Dance Company, Quark Contemporary Dance Theatre, The Stone Dance Collective and Ballet Bellevue (Seattle); and Unum Dance Company, Scott Wells and Jo Kreiter (San Francisco). She has set new works on Relay Dance Collective, students at the UW and at Whatcom Community College, and has produced two original screen dances. In addition to teaching dance technique and theory, she is a certified Dance Church™ guide and Pilates mat and reformer instructor. Alethea’s creative and academic interests include accessibility and inclusivity of education, fusions of dance practices and American pop-culture, and social change through movement expression. She is a native Washingtonian.
